'Greenwashing' is a term that almost everyone would find intriguing and would want to google immediately, just like me when I stumbled upon it recently. It was coined by Jay Westerveld in the year 1986, after his visit to Fiji islands. It was when he bumped into a quote put up by a resort about reusing the towels provided by the resort in order to save the coral reefs. According to a non-profit, Corp-watch, greenwashing is defined as "the phenomena of socially and environmentally destructive corporations, attempting to preserve and expand their markets or power by posing as friends of the environment (Scientific American).
I am surprised that I wasn't aware that it had a name, even though I had known about such a thing happening in the world. Nowadays, people are more conscious about the products and accessories they consume and utilise on a daily basis. Individuals are bound to buy 'chemical-free' and organically grown and manufactured products for ones own safety and good health. The fake appellations and labels like 'eco-friendly', 'sustainable', 'recyclable' are what draw the people towards the products manufactured by
companies.
Unfortunately, many are ignorant about the fact about the high end companies who trick them in buying products that are harmful for both humans as well as the environment. Being mindful and creating awareness regarding the greenwashing among people across the world could be one solution.
But, the problem doesn't end there. Does it? How we would manage to put a full stop to 'greenwashing' so as to allow the environment to be on its own is a huge task.
